Campbelltown City Council Champions Change

Campbelltown City Council has joined The Sebastian Foundation and our partner, textiles recycling business e-THREAD, in an innovative circular economy program to support youth mental health and improve sustainability across Campbelltown.

Around twenty clothing collection bins have been placed at prominent locations across Campbelltown so people can drop off their unwanted clothing, which will then be recycled or repurposed by e-THREAD.

Proceeds from each bin are used to help schools access Open Parachute, an in-school youth mental health program that is teaching more than 1200 local students vital mental health skills to build resilience and confidence to live their best lives.

In addition, the council receives regular reporting to show exactly how many kilos of waste they’ve diverted from landfill, how they’ve reduced carbon emissions, energy and water consumption, and the number of jobs and local students they’ve supported.

“This partnership will support an important mental health program while also contributing to sustainability in our city, “ Mayor Dr George Greiss said.

“These bins are an easy way for people to dispose of their unwanted clothing, keeping it out of landfill, while providing other people within the community the opportunity to find good quality and affordable clothing,” Dr Greiss said.

Guy Sebastian of The Sebastian Foundation said “We are thrilled that the council has come on board with this initiative. The e-Thread program is a perfect way to address a huge environmental challenge while making a real difference to the community. It’s a beautiful example of a circular economy. Thank you Campbelltown City Council for sharing our passion for youth mental health and taking action.”
